Writing Life: It doesn’t always go according to plan but inspiration can still drop in

The writing’s on hold because I accidentally injured myself and have been on painkillers this week. The med gives me a solid 7 hours of undisturbed sleep but also has this effect of completely knocking me out.

Biscuitus didn’t like seeing his hooman totally blacked out on the sofa, which was not what he expected from his daily routine.

He has a strict bedtime where he expects everyone to settle in at a specific time so he can too. Like most cats, he likes the predictability of a routine and this was a departure.

He decided to turn himself into an alarm clock and circled around my head for a while, meowing loudly until I woke up.

This made him so happy that he immediately launched into a whole lot of midnight zoomies, jumping up on a door, pushing stuff off places and just running around…

Rain lover watching the world go by 😻

I also invented a word while zonked out (since this is a writing life blog we are allowed to make up our own words) 😁

This was the whimsically weird “Eleventy One”, which came to me approximately an hour after taking the meds, dozing off, waking up to look at the clock which showed 11:10 and reading it like that. A half-awake, half sleepy brain comes up with stuff like this.

I’m thinking of a scene: “And Biscuitus said, “It’s eleventy one”…” before he does something totally unusual.

I looked up eleventy one and apparently J R R Tolkien already came up with this term so can I use it?

I read his LOTR 3-part series years ago when the movies came out but still have the rest of his works on my reading list.

I don’t remember the eleventy one part because it was totally overshadowed by the ringwraiths, their black horses and all the rest of it.

Over the last few days, I also got some interesting visuals for story scenes, which are so out of the box that they would’ve never made it past the fully awake brain’s rational filter.

I’ve decided to keep these “inspirations” for later use within one of the story series. And also to try to remember the weird things that come to mind between the sleeping and waking phases.

I’m back at the desk trying to edit my draft for a 7K+ word short story for the new series.

Today's view outside is perfect for a writer.

There’s a cyclone in the bay and it’s been raining non-stop since early yesterday morning.

A windy, rainy day outside, the cozy feel of steaming coffee in a mug while I write and my cat muse sleeping on my desk is my idea of the perfect writing day.

I guess the point of this post is not to dismiss the strange creative ideas that come in between the sleeping and waking twilight state.

Speaking of twilight, my new short story features a black horse and a twilight scene. And I really want to finish it and publish it this month.

Hmmm… Time’s short and I need to get back to my editing so that’s it for today.
